It is a graphic printing technique, invented by Benedetto Castiglione in the 17th century. Instead of on paper or canvas, monotypes are painted on glass, igelite or metal plates and as long as the paint is still wet, an impression is made on paper with a press or by hand rubbing. As a rule, with this technique there is only a single print possible.
