What do we see in this poster?

This poster-printed mural “Tiger and Magpie” by Korean artist Misun Kim is an extremely rare classic Asian work of art today. Although the mural was created in 2014, the style and motif make it merge with a bygone era of art. We first see the tiger, which is given a lot of space in the artwork due to its imposing size. The color of the fur and the camouflage stripes make it blend into the background. Only the bright yellow-red eyes and the tongue stand out and give us an idea of the animal's roar. Behind the tiger there is a tree snaking up on which two magpies are sitting and looking down at the tiger. Finally we see an intense red sun in the sky, slightly obscured by clouds. We can still see an almost invisible thin blue-green line running through the image. We imagine that it is the shore of a lake in Korea, at a time when our civilization was, if at all, in its infancy and there was no human influence, because today we can imagine such a motif can no longer be found in the real world.

Tiger personality traits in the zodiac sign

Tigers are majestic, fearsome and fierce creatures. They are also stealthy and determined hunters. The tiger's personality reflects all of these characteristics. People of this zodiac sign are characterized by courage and leadership qualities. They like to do things their own way, and when they set a goal, they will do whatever it takes to achieve it. However, her incredible joy of life also has some dark sides. Tigers tend to be impulsive, rebellious and quick-tempered. When the tiger throws a tantrum, that anger can spread to innocent bystanders. Tiger years can therefore be very explosive times.

Tiger and magpie, joy and happiness

Tiger motifs, especially tigers and magpies, are very popular in Korean folk painting. This is because they show strong Korean characteristics.

In the tiger and magpie depiction, the magpie is a symbol of good news, and the tiger is a symbol of a protector who protects against evil. Sometimes a leopard appears instead of a tiger. The Chinese pronunciation of Tiger - bao (豹) is the same as Happiness - bao (報), which means to inform. Magpie means joy, so Drawing a magpie-tiger means joy and happiness (Annunciation) to convey.

The Tiger and Magpie mural could be a meaningful gift for the Year of the Tiger 2022.

Tiger and magpie, David and Goliath

However, popular painting of tiger and magpie was not limited to the symbol of good luck and protector. A satire was added to the original symbol, which criticized social absurdity. In this picture of the tiger and the magpie, a tiger that should be feared is comically drawn and a small magpie appears with a flourish. The tiger is far from being the king of beasts. There are many types of tigers, such as the dull and ridiculous "Baboho tiger", a sharp-headed tiger, a cat-like tiger, a smoking tiger, a castrated tiger and a tiger looking for a magpie.

The tiger here symbolizes an official, who uses his power to commit tyranny, and the magpie stands for the powerless citizens. Criticism of society, especially dissatisfaction with the poor treatment of the ruling class, is expressed allegorically and humorously in folk painting.

In these paintings, the feeling of equality of the common people, who want to demote an authoritarian being to an ordinary person like himself, is expressed. In fact, the magpie becomes more and more proud and even opposes the tiger or ignores its existence. When the tiger attacks, the magpie flies away. Seen in this way, the real protagonist in the folk tale Magpie-Tiger is not a tiger, but a magpie. It is a paradox unique to Korean folk painting that a magpie plays the role of master in a tiger painting.

Interestingly, a painting that... depicts the battle between the boy David and the giant general Goliath, also popular in the West during the Renaissance as a symbol of the Protestant struggle against Catholic authority. So this Tiger and Magpie painting could be a Korean version of David and Goliath.
